The RAV4 Prime plug-in hybrid joins the lineup. The hybrid model gets a new XLE Premium trim.

It includes 19-inch wheels, a power liftgate, dual-zone automatic temperature control, faux-leather upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and shift knob, among other features not found on the LE and XLE.

The 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine in the 2021 RAV4 produces 203 horsepower and is mated with an eight-speed automated transmission.

Front-wheel drive is still standard, but depending on specification, Toyota also offers a choice of all-wheel-drive systems.

The Adventure model, when drove, included an all-wheel-drive system that could disconnect the rear axle to increase fuel economy when needed.

When driving down the highway, the RAV4 seems robust and steady, and it holds its own when thrown into a tight piece of road, but it lacks the confidence like the Mazda CX-5.

Fuel Range & Mileage

The EPA gave the RAV4 class-competitive fuel-economy ratings.

RAV4s with front-wheel drive can get up to 35 mpg on the interstate.

On a 200-mile highway fuel-economy route, the all-wheel-drive Adventure returned 32 mpg, one mpg less than the EPA’s predicted figure for that trim.

Soft-touch surfaces and suitable plastics were mixed in the version we tested. The LE specification level has cloth seats, a plasticky steering wheel, and single-zone manual climate control.

The XLE Premium adds faux-leather upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, and a stitched and cushioned dashboard and center console armrest to the next-step-up XLE.

Still, there’s much more to appreciate on the XLE Premium. The RAV4’s back seats are simple to stow and fold nearly flat, allowing for more cargo space.

We could fit 10 carry-on baggage behind the back seat and 22 when the center was folded.
