The Subaru WRX STI could be an electric vehicle in the future.
Next-Gen Subaru WRX STI – Overview
The 2021 Subaru WRX STI could be remembered as the final STI model to use an internal-combustion engine.
Subaru today revealed that the gas-powered STI is no longer available and hinted that the famous model’s next iteration could be an electric vehicle.
Here are the major highlights:
- According to a statement published by Subaru today, the next-generation could be electric.
- Subaru also hinted at the possibility of expanding its performance-oriented STI brand to more cars in the future.
- Subaru has stated that it would not produce an STI version of the recently revised WRX on the new platform.
Since it was reworked entirely on a new platform, we’ve been waiting to introduce the STI’s high-performance equivalent, the WRX sedan.
We envisaged it with a more powerful turbocharged 2.0-liter flat-four than the standard model’s 271 horsepower, something closer to 400 horsepower.
On the other hand, Subaru has said that it would not produce an internal-combustion version of the next-generation WRX STI based on the standard WRX platform.
Subaru noted in an official statement that the car industry’s move to electrification influenced its focus on electric versions of its performance vehicles.
The goals of decreasing pollutants and adhering to government fuel-economy rules were also mentioned. The plug-in hybrid Crosstrek is currently the only electrified Subaru model available.
The 2023 Solterra, a subcompact SUV developed in collaboration with Toyota’s bZ4X, will be the company’s first all-electric vehicle.
Subaru also hinted at the possibility of expanding its performance-oriented STI brand to more cars in the future.
However, we’re not clear if this implies the STI name will be extended to encompass gas-powered vehicles in the future or if all STIs will be electric.
We saw a Solterra STI concept at the Tokyo Auto Salon in 2022, but we weren’t given any technical details.
