Lotus is best known for its light, agile sports cars, but the British automaker is nearing a crucial turning point.

The Lotus Emira is the company’s penultimate gas-powered vehicle, and an electric lineup is on the way.

Here are the major highlights:

  • According to Motor1, patent photos of the Lotus Type 132, the company’s first SUV and second electric vehicle, were submitted to IP Australia, revealing the car’s design.
  • Active aerodynamics and prominent lidar sensors fitted to the front and back of the roof will be included on Type 132.
  • On March 29, Lotus Type 132 will be revealed entirely.

Lotus has submitted new patent photos to IP Australia, giving us our first look at the Type 132 SUV, which will be unveiled on March 29.

Lotus Type 132 – Exterior Desgin

The Lotus Type 132 will be the company’s first SUV, and it appears to be relatively small. It will most likely be in size range of the Porsche Macan and Cayenne.

With a short, sloping hood and stretched cabin, it takes advantage of its electric design, and it appears to have a remarkably long rear overhang for an EV.

Although this design is still illegal in the United States, the crossover looks to have ditched standard side-view mirrors in favor of cameras. A lidar sensor is prominently installed above the windshield.

Battery Power & Range

Type 132 will be built on a chassis that can hold batteries ranging from 92.0 to 120.0 kWh and will feature an 800-volt electrical system for quick charging.

As a result, we expect the new SUV to surpass Lotus’ first electric vehicle, the 3,700-pound, 1972-hp Evija supercar, as the heaviest Lotus ever.

We’ll have more information when Lotus Type 132 is introduced later this month.
