Chevy Colorado ZR2 Bison prototype- General Motors has shared a video featuring a prototype of the Chevy ZR2 pickup truck in Nevada, hinting at the impressive performance of the upcoming Bison model.

This development will likely fuel the competition among high-performance pickup trucks, setting the stage for a new era of performance wars.

  • Chevrolet‘s engineers showed journalists a camouflaged ZR2 Colorado after testing the 2023 Colorado ZR2.
  • The engineers did not confirm that it was the new ZR2 Bison model, but a “Bison” sticker was spotted on one of the prototypes DSSV Dampers attached to the truck.
  • The Bison model was previously an accessory showcase but now appears to be a higher-performing version of the ZR2.
  • The ZR2 Bison boasts unique long-travel suspension and 35-inch tires that raise the truck’s height by an estimated two inches compared to the standard ZR2.

During a recent three-day Vegas-to-Reno off-road race in the Nevada desert, Chevrolet Performance engineers surprised attendees by unveiling a distinctively camouflaged ZR2 prototype.

The vehicle was equipped with massive 35-inch tires mounted on beadlock-capable rims, and initial impressions suggested that it was much more than a typical ZR2 with taller tires.

The recently unveiled camouflaged ZR2 prototype from Chevrolet features a raised stance, standing approximately two inches taller than a standard ZR2 parked next to it.

The larger radius of the 35-inch tires explains half of this difference, with the other half attributable to an additional inch of suspension lift.

The prototype’s Multimatic DSSV dampers were engineering sample “take-apart” pieces, suggesting that the new ZR2 variant will feature unique suspension tuning to accommodate the taller stance and larger tires.

The new ZR2 prototype from Chevrolet, believed to be a higher-performance version, appears to have additional suspension travel beyond the 9.9 inches of front travel and 11.6 inches of rear travel of a regular ZR2.

This speculation is supported not only by the prototype’s higher stance and increased fender gap but also by the presence of unique hydraulic front and rear bump stops branded by Chevrolet Performance.

These bump stops are designed to cushion the vehicle upon landing and absorb the compression travel extremes when driven off-road at high speeds.

Identifying the Potential Bison in the Chevy ZR2 Prototype

There are reasons why the Chevy ZR2 prototype seen in Nevada could be a Bison model. Firstly, the new ZR2 Desert Boss is already set to showcase the latest accessories for this year, which could indicate that there is still room for a more extreme performance model.

Secondly, the presence of the word “Bison” on one of the ID stickers of the engineering-sample DSSV dampers is a clear indicator.

Although the prototype’s interior and engine didn’t reveal any significant differences, there is a possibility that the standard ZR2’s 2.7-litre turbo engine’s output of 310 horsepower and 430 pound-feet could be increased through software and turbo boost adjustments, which would not be immediately visible.

After catching a glimpse of a camouflaged ZR2 with unique features such as a taller stance, 35-inch tires, and long-travel suspension with hydraulic bump stops, we eagerly anticipate releasing a high-performance ZR2 Bison variant.

Whether there are changes to the engine or not, this Bison model will significantly impact the mid-size truck performance market. We are excited to see what’s happening as the competition heats up.
