2023 Ferrari Purosangue – Overview

Ferrari has produced sports vehicles in various forms throughout its long history.

Even more recent outliers include an all-wheel-drive shooting brake and a hybrid with a V-6.

Here are the major highlights:

  • Ferrari’s long-awaited foray into the SUV market, the 2023 Purosangue, has finally been made public.
  • A naturally aspirated V-12 engine with 715 horsepower is standard on the Purosangue.
  • It has four seats and rear-hinged rear doors to make it easier to access the back seats.

In addition, there are front-engine four-seaters with V-12s, mid-engine two-seaters with V-8s, and even rear-engine two-seaters with V-12s.

But we can promise that the 2023 Purosangue is unlike any Ferrari you’ve ever seen.

This is the company’s long-awaited entry into the inescapable ultra-luxury SUV market and the factory’s first four-door vehicle equipped with the prancing horse logo.

Of course, Ferrari prefers not to refer to this new model as an SUV and instead describes it as an addition to its sports car lineup with a new form factor designed to increase comfort and adaptability.

The production model shown above will begin shipping to U.S. consumers in late 2023, and the project’s code name Purosangue “pureblood” will be kept to underscore that it’s just as much a Ferrari as any other.

It will initially only be offered with one powertrain, a 6.5-liter naturally aspirated V-12 engine with a maximum rev limit of 8250 rpm, ensuring that it will continue to carry the Ferrari name.

With only 528 pound-feet of torque, the nonturbo V-12 lags behind its boosted competitors but still outperforms the twin-turbo V-8 in the Lamborghini Urus Performante with 715 horsepower.

According to Ferrari, eighty percent of that torque will be usable at 2100 rpm.

But the 2023 Ferrari Purosangue is guaranteed to be a revvy machine because the power peak is at 7750 rpm and the torque peak is at 6250 rpm.

We predict the Purosangue’s curb weight to be close to 5000 pounds based on Ferrari’s dry weight estimation.

Ferrari forecasts that it will reach 62 mph in 3.3 seconds and reach a top speed of 193 mph, making it one of the fastest SUVs we’ve ever tested.

The unconventional all-wheel-drive technology was first employed on the FF and later on the GTC4 Lusso. The transmission is an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic.

Up to 124 mph and just in the first four ratios, it is a front-driver above that.

The same Side Slip Control system as other Ferraris, which controls the traction control, stability control, and ABS programming, is a standard feature, along with rear-wheel steering.

The Purosangue’s revolutionary suspension technology is something Ferrari is incredibly proud of, claiming that it is the crucial element that enables such a tall, significant, and heavy vehicle to achieve the company’s high standards for handling performance.

The system uses active spool-valve dampers made by Multimatic, the same business that provides non-active adaptive dampers for the Colorado ZR2 and select performance variants of the Chevy Camaro.

With an electric motor at each corner that can exert force on the dampers to regulate body motions, the new units in the Ferrari go a step further and do away with the necessity for anti-roll bars.

The Purosangue’s suspension can also lower the vehicle by 0.4 inches while making sharp turns.

Still, there is no way to boost the ride height above the conventional 7.2 inches of ground clearance, highlighting that the vehicle is not designed for off-roading.

The front and back tires on the staggered wheel and tire combo measure 22 inches wide by 255 inches wide, respectively.

The Purosangue’s proportions are more similar to those of the GTC4 Lusso than any of its higher SUV rivals, with a long, low nose and a rising character line that forms a wedge-like appearance.

According to Ferrari designers, a distinct division between the upper and lower bodies was envisaged.

The lower section, which consists of an aggressive rear diffuser and wheel-well cladding that can be coated in carbon fiber or matte black, is meant to communicate the car’s power and capacity.

The upper section is intended to be smooth and attractive.

Visually, the discrete components help the Purosangue appear shorter, but the design is disjointed due to the abundance of aesthetic aspects vying for your attention.

For instance, the front end deceives you with fake headlamp cutouts that aren’t even headlights.

Instead, the scooped-out components close to the hood cutline are air vents, and the lighting strips that cut through them act as turn signals and daytime running lights.

Further down, the actual headlights are on either side of the lower air intake.

Of course, we’ll leave you the final judgment on the Purosangue’s appearance.

Still, we’re curious to see how it will appear in the various color combinations available because Ferrari intends to offer customers a wide range of customization options for their cars’ interior and exterior.

Like a Rolls-Royce, the Purosangue has rear doors open from the front.

The B-pillar is still present, but Ferrari claims this design facilitates access to and exit from the back seat. Additionally, engineers claimed that it enabled them to improve the interior’s perceived size without significantly extending the wheelbase.

The Purosangue is strictly a four-seater because it has two separate rear seats as standard equipment. The rear seats may be folded flat to increase the 17 cubic feet of cargo space.

There are two 10.2-inch digital gauge clusters for the driver and the front passenger in the dashboard, but no central infotainment panel exists.

Instead, the dashboard uses the same digital displays as other Ferrari vehicles.

Along with numerous additional buttons and knobs, the steering wheel has the well-known Mannetino drive-mode controller.

Trims of various leather, Alcantara, and carbon fiber mixes will be offered.

A glass roof with electrochromic tint changes is an alternative to the regular carbon-fiber top.

The Purosangue won’t be a simple item to find when it goes on sale late next year.

Not only will its starting price be close to $400,000, but many examples are already reserved because current Ferrari owners were given first refusal months ago.

Moreover, demand will outstrip supply because Ferrari says it doesn’t want the Purosangue to account for more than 20% of its sales.

To create “different Ferrari for different Ferraristi,” as Ferrari likes to remark. And this Ferrari is unquestionably a different kind.
