2023 BMW 7 Series – Overview

The 7-series, which has long been BMW‘s flagship sedan and the brand’s most elegant and innovative car, has received an altogether new generation for the 2023 model year.

However, the formula is similar to the existing vehicle: powertrains include a turbocharged inline-six, a twin-turbo V-8, and a later plug-in hybrid.

Because of modifications to the chassis and suspension, including a new rear-wheel steering system, handles a little better than the 2022 model.

Its driver-assistance technology allows it to drive semi-autonomously on highways.

Still, the car’s star feature is an optional 31.3-inch rear entertainment display called Theater Screen, which hangs from the ceiling and streams TV and movies via the onboard Wi-Fi connection.

For the 2023 model year, the 7-series has been overhauled, with a plusher cabin, more modern technology, and a bolder exterior appearance.

The first deliveries are expected in November 2022, with production starting this summer.

The 740i will be powered by BMW’s silky inline-six engine and will only be available with rear-wheel drive.

Most customers should find this version adequate, but those seeking all-wheel drive or more horsepower should choose the 760i xDrive, which features a twin-turbo V-8.

Again, we recommend the Executive Lounge package (power-adjustable reclining rear seats with massage, among other comforts) and the fancy 31.3-inch Theater Screen back-seat entertainment system, which can stream video via the car’s onboard Wi-Fi connection you plan to be chauffeured in your new 7-series.

The i7, an all-electric variation based on the same body shell, will be reviewed separately.

Interior Design

The 7-series is the pinnacle of the BMW fleet, offering a plethora of comforts to its passengers.

The interior of the 7-series is upscale, with rich-smelling leathers, stainless steel accents, and elegant glass and wood trim elements; purchasers may even choose a new cashmere upholstery option if it suits their style.

In addition, the luxurious cabin now has the technology, flair, and luxury to compete with the Mercedes-Benz S-class.

The 7-series impresses most when fitted with the Executive Lounge option, which adds power-adjustable reclining rear seats with massage, a wireless smartphone charging station for the back seat area, and adjustable neck cushions and headrests, among other features.

In addition, the trunk is about the size of a full-size luxury automobile, and a rear-seat pass-through allows you to transport longer goods like skis.

The dashboard of the 7-series is similar to that of the iX SUV, which features an expansive digital gauge display set behind the same glass panel as the infotainment touchscreen.

The reconfigurable arrays provide crisp quality and quick reaction.

An optional rear-seat entertainment system called Theater Screen uses a massive 31.3-inch display that deploys from the car’s ceiling.

Rear-seat passengers may watch Netflix or browse the web via an onboard 5G cellular data connection, interfacing with the system via touchscreen displays embedded into the door panels.

Safety Features

Several new driver-assistance features are available, including a new hands-free driving mode for highway use and an enhanced parking assistant feature that allows the driver to exit the vehicle and park it using a smartphone app.

The following are expected to be key safety features:

  • Lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist is standard.
  • Automatic emergency braking with pedestrian recognition is standard.
  • Adaptive cruise control with a semi-autonomous driving mode is available.

Engine Specifications

The 740i comes equipped with a 375-hp turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine, which is aided by a 48-volt hybrid system; the rear-wheel drive is the only configuration available.

According to BMW, the 740i is expected to reach 60 mph in only 5.0 seconds.

The 760i xDrive is standard with a 536-hp twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V-8 engine and all-wheel drive.

This engine also features a 48-volt hybrid system, and BMW claims it can reach 60 mph in 4.2 seconds. During a brief test-drive event in Germany, we tasted the eight-cylinder prototype vehicle and were impressed by its smooth operation and powerful acceleration.

Air suspension is standard on the new car, and BMW has also included a rear-wheel steering system and variable dampers in the chassis.

As a result, the new car is more elegant than the previous model, although it still prioritizes comfort above athleticism.

Fuel economy estimates for the 2023 7-series lineup have not been released. Still, thanks to the electrical help and minor adjustments to the gas-fired engines, we expect small improvements over the outgoing model.

2023 BMW 7 Series Release Date
