The 2022 Tesla Model Y attempted to cash in on the Model 3’s raging success. Instead, the 2022 Model Y feels like a lazy attempt to cater to the SUV-buying masses.
In contrast, the Model 3 masters its purpose with a tremendous range. Unfortunately, Model Y handling is less engaging than the 3’s.
While mainly carried over from the sedan, its cabin doesn’t do enough to stand out, intensifying criticisms of its fit-finish and the issues that the all-digital environment causes. But, before we get into details,

Here are the three major highlights of the 2022 Tesla Model Y:
- Choosing the more appealing 20-inch models reduces the range to 318 miles per charge.
- The Long Range’s estimated driving range has increased to 330 miles when fitted with the standard 19-inch wheels.
- The entry-level Standard Range model will be phased out in 2022, making the Long Range the basic model.
What’s Inside the 2022 Tesla Model Y?
First, the 2022 Model Y lacks the Model X crossover’s complicated Falcon Wing doors.
Instead, its interior is mainly carried over from the Model 3 sedan. It is primarily button-free, relying instead on a large infotainment display centred on a simple dashboard.
An all-glass roof gives the cabin an airy feel, but it is heavily tinted to keep occupants from roasting in Sun Belt states.
The optional third row of seats adds $3000 to the Model Y’s price, and they’ll probably be large enough for adults to ride comfortably.
Almost every function in the Model Y is controlled by the large, slim infotainment display in the dashboard’s centre.
This display shows everything from climate control to the speedometer, which takes some getting used to.
The 2022 Tesla Model Y includes the same entertainment features as the Model 3, including embedded Netflix, Hulu, YouTube apps, and video games ideal for passing the time while waiting for the battery to charge at a public charging station.
However, drivers are not permitted to use these distractions while the vehicle is in motion.
Tesla is well-known for its cutting-edge Autopilot semi-autonomous driving system, standard on the Model Y.
Even more advanced features, such as self-parking and Summons, are optional.
Standard automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection, standard lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, and common adaptive cruise control with the semi-autonomous driving mode is also included.
Engine, Range & Battery Performance
There is no longer a Standard Range trim level in the Model Y range.
The Model Y’s Long Range and Performance trims are more appealing than the Standard Range trim.
Although the Model Y has fantastic acceleration, it does not provide the same level of driving pleasure as the Model 3.
The SUV’s body raises the centre of gravity, dulling the sharp edge of the Model 3’s handling. The Y’s ride is also noticeably harsher over road irregularities.
The all-wheel-drive Long Range model has a range of 330 miles, while the Performance model has a range of 303 miles.
On the other hand, the latter has 20-inch wheels, lowered suspension, a higher top speed (155 mph), faster acceleration, and a dedicated Track mode.
The EPA estimates that the Long Range model gets 131 MPGe in the city and 117 MPGe on the highway, while the Performance model gets 115 MPGe in the city and 106 MPGe on the road.
The Long Range model recorded 94 MPGe and an estimated highway driving range of 220 miles on our 200-mile highway fuel-economy test route.
The performance model delivered 98 MPGe and 230 miles of driving range.
