2022 Polestar 2 Range Revealed!

2022 Polestar 2 Range – Overview

According to its EPA rating, the 2022 Polestar 2 with one electric motor will travel 270 miles on a full charge.

However, the front-drive variant traveled 220 miles before the battery was exhausted in our 75-mph motorway range test. That’s 20 miles more than a 2021 Polestar 2 with the dual-motor, all-wheel-drive powertrain, the same 19-inch Michelin Primacy 4 tires, and 30 miles more than a Polestar 2 with the Performance package on stickier 20s.

Here are the latest highlights:

  • In a 75-mph highway range test, the single-motor 2022 Polestar 2 covered 220 miles, falling 50 miles shy of its EPA-rated range of 270 miles.
  • The same test with a dual-motor 2021 Polestar 2 came up 20 miles short of that goal, totaling 200 miles.
  • The dual-motor model’s decreased real-world range is most likely due to the second motor’s added mass and mechanical drag.

Although these two Polestar 2s have the same 75.0-kWh battery, we know that they aren’t a perfect apples-to-apples comparison.

In addition to a new single-motor model for the 2022 model year, Polestar also announced “controller software and vehicle efficiency upgrades” that the firm claims will increase the dual-motor model’s range estimate from 233 to 249 miles.

While this extra range may be obtained via over-the-air updates on any 2021 Polestar 2, the dual-motor cars we tested were built before that update was issued.

Their battery capacity stays the same, so we don’t expect substantial variances in our highway range results between the single and dual-motor variants due to the software change.

However, the single-motor Polestar 2 will have a longer range than the dual-motor Polestar 2 while traveling at 75 mph on identical interstate routes. There are a few technical explanations for this.

The shorter range with such a design is most likely due to the extra mechanical drag created by the additional unclutched drive shafts on the second motor.

Another factor is the increased bulk that comes from installing a second motor. In comparison, the curb weight of the dual-motor type we tested was 4714 pounds.

The single-motor variant, which hit the scales at 4460 pounds, was 254 pounds heavier.

20 or 30 miles of real-world highway range is a minor difference between the Polestar’s two powertrain combinations.

The base price for the 2022 Polestar 2 single-motor variant is $47,200 (not including the $7500 federal tax credit).

The second motor costs at least $4000 extra, but it gives significantly faster acceleration and a more enjoyable driving experience.

The 231 horsepower and 243 pound-feet of torque of the single powertrain resulted in an ordinary 6.8-second sprint to 60 mph.

Meanwhile, the two motors produce 408 horsepower and 487 pound-feet of torque, allowing the EV to reach 60 mph in 4.1 sec.

With the purchase of a new over-the-air performance update, those power figures can be increased even further to 476 and 502, respectively.

So, if we had to choose, we’d give up a little range to choose fast over the maximum range.
