With a primary, rectangular grille and unadorned flanks, the external style of this 2022 Ford Maverick truck is reminiscent and straightforward, just like F-150 from the early 1990s.
The 2022 Ford Maverick is packed with innovative technologies, and its cabin is far more adaptable and welcoming. However, the Maverick isn’t as flashy as Hyundai’s stylish Santa Cruz.
It’s a solid truck that acts as Ford’s entry-level model now that the company no longer sells compact cars in the US.
It’s constructed on a unibody chassis and comes standard with front-wheel drive, just like today’s hatchbacks and sedans.
This truck, which comes in three trim levels and only has a four-door body, five seats, and a 4.5-foot cargo box (half a foot longer than the Santa Cruz’s), was built for light-duty use and drivers who had never owned a pickup before.
The revolutionary Flexbed, which can accommodate up to 1,500 pounds, is a feature that first-time truckers appreciate.
That’s not all; because of the Maverick’s low riding height and the box’s short sidewalls, reaching in and grabbing items is a breeze.
The tailgate locks in the middle position, allowing you to insert 4×8 sheets of construction material right into the wheel wells.

The cabin is brightened with orange accents, and outstanding ergonomics and easy-to-use controls make this a pleasant place to be.
The plastic steering wheel does not appear or feel cheap. The seats of this mid-range Maverick XLT are upholstered in a two-tone fabric that looks very good and feels terrific.
The front seats are supportive and pleasant all day, while the back seat is sufficient.
Adults can sit comfortably. However, the backrest is a little too high, and legroom is limited.
In addition, this vehicle doesn’t have a push-button start because of its low price, so you’ll have to insert an old-fashioned key into the steering column and twist it to get it started.
This display is low-resolution and awkwardly off-center on the dashboard. Things appear washed out from the driver’s seat due to unfavorable viewing angles.
However, the Sync 3 infotainment system is quick and straightforward. A primary feature is an 8-inch touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
Unfortunately, embedded navigation isn’t available for free, so bring your phone and a cable with you.
Engine Specifications & Performance
In the Maverick, a hybrid powertrain is standard, generating a good 191 horsepower and a fantastic 37 mpg combined (42mpg urban street & 33mpg highway).
This engine is OK for light-duty work or cruising around town. However, if you want all-wheel drive, the capacity to tow up to 4,000 pounds (when properly equipped), or something a little more spirited, opt for the optional 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine.
It produces 250 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque. That higher-level engine is surprisingly good for a truck engine, giving substantial performance over the rpm band.
When you punch it, the Maverick jumps to life, slamming you back into your seat with a powerful, persistent shove until the transmission shifts into the next gear.
That EcoBoost engine is a model of refinement as well. When you first turn it on, there are no shudders or vibrations.
While functioning, it’s just as silky, generating very little noise and remaining as smooth as whipped butter.
The stop-start system is also transparent, cutting the engine while stopped at red lights and instantly restarting it.
A standard eight-speed automatic transmission aids the Maverick’s brisk performance. This unit flirts with greatness all around, slurring between gears and dropping ratios with ease when you need to accelerate.
You can feel it downshifting while rolling to a stop. Expect 22 mpg in the urban street and 29 mpg on the highway with all-wheel drive and the 2.0-liter engine.
This vehicle is rated at 25 mpg in combined driving, but I’m getting more than 27 mpg in mixed driving, and that’s without really trying.
Front-wheel drive improves the Maverick’s EPA ratings in all three categories by one mpg, but it’s still a long way from what the hybrid can achieve.
Aside from its adaptability and powertrain refinement, the Maverick’s driving manners are also unexpected.
This little pickup is strangely silent at highway speeds, and the stiff ride is silky smooth, with no roughness, vibration, or clunks.
The steering is excellent and substantial, giving the car a rooted sense.
When you combine a comfortable driving posture with superb outward visibility, you get a truck that drives as well as some luxury vehicles.
